General Environmental/Regulatory
UN negotiations to establish a legally binding treaty to curb plastic pollution began in Busan, South Korea, with 175 parties participating in the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC). The treaty aims to address the lifecycle of plastics, tackling production, waste management, and harmful chemicals.
Anglo American has agreed to sell its remaining Australian steelmaking coal mines to Peabody Energy for up to $3.78 billion. The deal includes Moranbah North, Grosvenor, Aquila, and Capcoal mines, while the Dawson mine will be sold separately for $455 million to Delta Dunia Group.
Hydrogen
The Australian government has introduced a bill in parliament to establish the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (HTPI), which offers subsidies of A$2 (US$1.30) per kilogram of green hydrogen produced. If passed, the legislation will provide significant financial support to green hydrogen developers, aiming to bolster Australia's position in the global hydrogen market and accelerate its clean energy transition.

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)
President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is preparing an executive order to lift the Biden administration's moratorium on natural gas export permits. This move is part of a broader energy strategy that includes expanding drilling on federal lands and waters, repealing regulations on fossil-fuel power plants, and boosting oil and gas production to lower energy costs. The Biden moratorium, in place since January, halted new LNG export permits while assessing the climate, economic, and security impacts, potentially delaying multibillion-dollar projects. Trump has pledged to reverse the pause on his first day in office.

Nuclear Energy
Brazil's Angra-1 nuclear power plant has received approval from the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) to operate until 2044, extending its lifespan to 60 years. Operator Eletronuclear plans to invest $550 million by 2027 for upgrades to control systems, security, and waste management.It is one of Brazil’s two nuclear plants, contributing 2.7% of national electricity, while the delayed Angra-3 reactor faces ongoing construction and planning disputes.

Renewable Energy
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have partnered on a €150 million renewable hydrogen project at a biorefinery in southeastern France. Air Liquide will invest €80 million to build, own, and operate a new hydrogen production unit, set to be operational by 2028, producing 25,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually from recycled biogenic by-products.
Masdar and China’s Silk Road Fund (SRF) have signed an MoU to co-invest up to $2.8 billion in renewable energy projects across countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The collaboration will focus on developing renewable energy infrastructure.
