Battery Metals
China's lithium reserves have surged to 16.5% of global totals, making it the second-largest holder worldwide. This is due to extensive exploration uncovering over 30 million metric tons of lithium across regions like Qinghai, Xinjiang, and Jiangxi.
Zijin Mining Group is in discussions to acquire a controlling stake in Zangge Mining, a $6.4 billion lithium and potash miner, by purchasing shares from two major stakeholders. The acquisition would strengthen Zijin's position in battery metals and further consolidate its ownership of the Julong copper project in Tibet, set to become China's largest single copper operation. Zijin, known for its aggressive global expansion, has been bolstering its lithium portfolio with assets in China, Argentina, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, alongside investments in lithium iron phosphate production for EVs.

Energy Efficiency
Hydrostor has received a conditional $1.76 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its 500 MW/4,000 MWh Willow Rock energy storage project in Southern California. The project will use Hydrostor’s advanced compressed-air energy storage (A-CAES) technology to provide up to eight hours of power. Construction is expected to begin by late 2025, with the facility slated to come online by 2030.

Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)
Constellation Energy has agreed to acquire Calpine Corp, a natural gas and geothermal operator, for $16.4 billion in a cash-and-stock deal. The acquisition was valued at $26.6 billion, including debt. The deal will make Constellation the largest independent power provider in the U.S., adding $2 billion to its annual free cash flow.
The Alaska Gasline Development Corporation (AGDC) has signed an exclusive agreement with developer Glenfarne to advance the $44 billion Alaska LNG project. The project, set to begin delivering natural gas in 2031, will include the following:
An Arctic Carbon Capture plant.
LNG export facility in Nikiski.
807-mile pipeline across the state.

Renewable Energy
Origis Energy has secured $415 million in funding to complete its Swift Air Solar project in Ector County, Texas. The financing includes $290 million in construction and term debt from Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking and $125 million in tax equity from Advantage Capital. The solar project will provide zero-emission power to Occidental’s STRATOS Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility in the Permian Basin. The project is set to begin commercial production by March 2025.
